Michael S. Schmidt started his career as a student. Before he graduated, he took a semester off to take six-month employment at the Boston Globe. After completing six months, he went back to school and graduated.

After graduating in 2005, Michael worked part-time as a wing deliveryman at Blondies. His pay for the first few weeks was free food, and later, he started earning $8 an hour with no tips.

Michael was employed by The New York Times as the news clerk. Two years later, he was appraised to the position of staff reporter. His task was to covert performance-enhancing chemical substances and legal issues in sports.

In his position, Schmidt broke the stories of David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and Sammy Sosa for being among the 100 top players who tested positive for performance-enhancing chemical substances in 2003. The report was published in 2009. The report also highlighted the exploitation of baseball players in the Dominican Republic by American agents and investors.

In 2010, Schmidt was in the news again for breaking out the story of how the firm of baseball super-agent Scott Boras had provided tens of thousands of dollars in loans to a young player.
